Allergies? Should you get air ducts cleaned?

The US Environmental Protection Agency is quick to remind concerned homeowners that we don’t yet know the full range of pros and cons concerning air duct cleaning. It is a very young cleaning process that hasn’t had time yet to be studied fully. For that reason, the agency will not give out what it calls ‘a blanket recommendation’ about whether or not you should have your home’s air ducts cleaned.

However, we will look at several reasons why we believe you should have your air ducts cleaned. It is a good idea, especially if you or a family member has allergies or other respiratory issues.

The EPA and the National Air Duct Cleaners Association, which is over 1,000 companies strong, will both admit that there are benefits for people who have allergies. Some companies will tell you to have the air ducts in your home cleaned every year, but other sources are more lenient. Whenever you notice dust or mold collecting in the duct, call for a professional cleaning regardless of how long it has been since the last time the air ducts were cleaned. You may notice this buildup yearly or much less frequently, so just keep an eye on it.

Although research doesn’t yet back up the need for air duct cleaning, personal testimonies do. Common sense tells us that getting rid of harmful or dirty elements will make us healthier.

Personal testimonies are the most convincing evidence for having air ducts professionally cleaned. People who suffer from allergies almost always say that they notice an improvement in the air quality in their home.

And if you simply can’t stand knowing the yucky stuff is lingering in your air ducts, have them cleaned! You mind can actually trick your body into feeling bad based on the power of suggestion. It sounds far-fetched, but your mind has great power over your body. Simply knowing that dust, mold or something alive might be making its home in your air ducts can make you feel symptoms that may or may not actually be present.

Cleaning out your air ducts is also shown to increase the efficiency of your heating and cooling units. Many satisfied customers claim that they do not have to run their units as much during the hottest and coldest times of the year. They also report decreases in their energy bills. Professional air duct cleaners say that dirty air ducts can have a very big effect on your heating and air efficiency, cutting it by as much as 40 percent.

Remember, though, that cleaning air ducts won’t do much good if the coils and central air system are not being maintained as well. We would definitely suggest that you have the entire system cleaned regularly to keep indoor and outdoor allergies in check.

For these reasons, we recommend having your air ducts cleaned if you have allergies. It will most likely improve the condition of your air, and it certainly will not hurt anything!
